The Layered Surface: Screen Printing on Clay

Materials and Tools
Students Bring:
Pencil, notebook/sketchbook, scissors
Hand drawn or computer generated images. No size requirement. Suggestions: patterns, plants, animals, shapes, abstract, photographs
Laptop/iPad/ tablet if generating images
Favorite tools for building such as scoring, cutting, and wire tools, ribs
Painters Tape
Variety of brushes such as:
Hake brush
Calligraphy brush
Liner brush
Watercolor brushes
Small clean up sponge
X-acto knife, needle tool
Slip Trailer (Alex’s favorite)
Palette or tray to hold underglaze
Box and bubble wrap to transport finished work
Bagged lunch (coffee and lite snacks provided)
Optional:
Soft-Leatherhard work to apply transfers (hand built or wheel-thrown). Forms such as cups, mugs, vases, and lidded forms work best for learning
Banding wheel
Apron
Texture tools
Alex will provide:
All materials for screen-printing set up for each student
Newsprint
Earthenware clay for small exercises
Underglaze
Brayers
Spatulas
Informative handouts
Printer
