Introduction to Soft Slab Hand Building
This course intends to demystify working with soft slabs and offers the essential components to creating unique hand built pots. It is intended for all levels of hand building enthusiasts. It provides the fundamentals for beginners as well as tips and techniques for the more advanced ceramicist. The format is self-paced so viewers can watch (and rewatch) on their own schedule.
This 2 hour 33 minute course covers:
Discussion on select hand building tools from Liz’s toolbox
Discussion and demonstrations on working with 2-dimensional patterns to create 3-dimensional forms
“Hand Building Basics”: a 46 minute segment where Liz provides tips and techniques to set viewers up for hand building success
Demonstration on constructing 2 cylindrical cups; one straight sided and one voluminous (this technique leads into any vertical form such as a pitcher, vase, lidded jar, etc)
Demonstration of 3 slab built handles
Demonstration and strategies to approach pre-bisque surface depth & texture which includes stenciling, stamping and slip trailing
Demonstration of a slab built tray with foot
Demonstration of a slab built tray using “punch down” method

In this lesson, Liz discusses pattern materials as well as strategies for making and altering 2- dimensional patterns which she uses to create 3-dimensional forms.

Chapter 2

Hand Building Basics
In this lesson, viewers will learn the four basic steps to how Liz begins all of her hand built forms. This lesson details techniques such as rolling and beveling a slab and compressing seams. Liz demonstrates making two varieties of cups using one paper pattern. She shares her personal insight into exposed seams and the “presence of the hand” in her work.

Chapter 3

Surface Depth & Texture
In this lesson, you will learn simple strategies for creating texture and surface depth. Demonstrations include stenciling, stamping, and slip trailing. Liz’s approach to surface applies to everyone, even those who feel intimidated by drawing or mark making on their pots.

Hand Built Trays
In this lesson, Liz demonstrates two small hand built trays using 2-dimensional patterns. Using minimal tools and molds allows the viewer to head into the studio and make these forms.
