Into the Weeds with Stencils on Clay with Sam Oliver: June 27th-June 29th, 2025

from $520.00

Description: This workshop covers the basics of uploading and editing hand drawn and photographed images into the Cricut Design Space program. Participants will experiment with various techniques such as using the Cricut Cutter, sketchbook and drawing exercises, digital drawing, vinyl and Tyvek cutting, application of Tyvek to greenware pottery, and slip application.

Although a new computer program can often be intimidating and frustrating, Sam will explain step-by-step how to use the Cricut Design Space program as well as help participants establish a foundation for using a Cricut Cutter for their future creative projects.

Participants should have a minimum of 5 greenware pieces prepared to bring to the workshop for decoration. Pieces should be in (what I refer to as) “cheese hard” state. The piece still has plenty of moisture, but not so much that it is malleable. Think of a block of cheddar cheese. When in doubt, wetter is better!

Participants are encouraged to bring a variety of forms to work with to test stencil placements. We will be using our pieces as canvases for our stencils and slip decoration. This technique lends itself beautifully to plates, mugs, sculptures with wide surfaces, and vases!

Note: Stencil application works best on smooth surfaces.

Sam Oliver received her BFA from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC in 2013. She spent 9 months completing a special student study with a focus in ceramics at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, while also studying 16th - 17th Century Earthenware Figures at The Decorative Arts Museum in Williamsburg. She has completed residencies at The Bascom Center for Arts, Brockway Center for Arts and Technology, Pocosin Arts School of Fine Crafts, Arrowmont School of Crafts, and Penland School of Craft. Sam has been published in Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated for her slab building and surface decorating techniques. She lives in Tryon, NC where she works full time in her home studio.

While living in Western North Carolina her interest in the native plant population grew. In higher elevations of the Appalachian mountains are vast temperate rainforests which support diverse ecosystems. Using ceramic vessels, Sam implements layered surfaces of high contrast to display the nuances of living amongst native and invasive plant life.
