Jamie Bates Slone is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the University of Oklahoma. She received her MFA from the University of Kansas and her BFA from the University of Central Missouri. In their studio practice, Jamie uses self- reflection to explore themes including mental health, sexuality, and gender.
“Through my artistic practice, I explore the depths of my identity and mental state, using scale, vignette, and surface to highlight the human body in all its operations. By doing so, I aim to encourage viewers to confront their psyche and challenge societal presumptions about what is deemed "normal" or "acceptable". My work tackles a range of subjects such as mental health, gender, and sexuality, resonating universally while reflecting my own unique experiences. In my studio practice, anxieties and revelations materialize through clay, creating objects that constantly evolve as I explore the complexities of being human and the more "private" aspects of my identity. Ultimately, my work promotes healthy self-exploration of both the body and mind. My art practice functions as a cathartic self-portrait that continues to evolve alongside my physical and mental growth. It provides a means of communication for emotions and ideas that were once hidden due to societal constructs or stigma.”
