Description: In this two-day workshop, the focus will be on creating a variety of hand built mugs using soft clay slabs. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with different forms and shapes, as well as learn how to make their own texture rollers and stamps to add designs to their mugs. Emphasis will be placed on attention to form and craftsmanship.

Additionally, students will learn various techniques for making handles to accompany their mugs. If time allows, there will also be a discussion on glazing strategies for students to use after the workshop.

Fee: $295. Fee includes the workshop, materials provided by the instructor, and a $20 non-refundable registration fee.

Level: This two day workshop is designed for students new to hand building as well as those interested in learning additional techniques to elevate their skill set. All levels welcome.

Firing: Bisque firing available. See options below. Participants may pick up fired work or request shipping for an additional fee.

Accommodations: Our “not so tiny” tiny home, The Casita, is located just steps from the teaching studio, this newly constructed home can accommodate 2 adults and has a full kitchen and bath. Additional accommodations can be found in the workshop guide here.

Bill Griffith is an artist, educator and former Arrowmont arts administrator living in Sevierville, Tennessee. He has taught workshops at Arrowmont, Penland, Peters Valley, Sugar Maples and Idyllwild. Bill is a recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship and was awarded NCECA’s coveted National Outstanding Achievement Award for his contributions to the ceramics field. HIs ceramic art is included in the collections of the Tennessee State Museum, Asheville Art Museum, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, and Tokoname Cultural Museum, Japan
