Sculpting Emotive Animals with Katie Maloney: May 31st-June 2nd, 2024

from $520.00

Description: This workshop intends to provide both beginner and seasoned sculptors methods to achieve their animal sculpture ideas. We will draw on inspiration from a rich history of animalia ceramics and our own life experiences to create personal and narrative sculptures. Over the course of three days, students will build multiple sculptures to practice scale and detail while learning various techniques including the hollowing method and coil building to form larger sculptures. Katherine will individually guide students on technical aspects and how to portray emotion and character in their animals, particularly through facial expressions. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own aesthetic approach, whether realistic or whimsical, and challenge themselves to explore new ideas. Demonstration will also include methods for achieving textured surfaces such as creating feathers, fur, or designs using slips and oxide washes. While the workshop does not include a firing, we’ll discuss various ways to glaze and fire the completed sculptures, including how to ensure their durability living outside.

Katherine Maloney grew up in Southeast Virginia on her family’s organic vegetable farm as the youngest daughter of creative and courageous entrepreneurs. She began following her interest in clay as a teenager by apprenticing with a local potter and family friend. She received her BA in ceramics at Guilford College and has participated in artist in residence programs, including STARworks Ceramics and as an assistant at Peters Valley ceramics studio. Katherine has taught workshops regionally and exhibited work nationally at galleries and fine art shows such as the Smithsonian Craft Show. In 2022, along with her sister and parents, Katherine purchased the land and house next to her family’s farm where she’s setting up a new and improved studio!

My ceramic work intends to honor wild animals on our shared planet. From an early age, I fostered admiration for the natural world while growing up on my family’s farm among the biodiversity of Southeastern Virginia. Working in my home studio next to the farm, I sculpt realistic animals who are singular sculptures or correspond with functional vessels and altered forms. Each animal is presented in gestures of significance and integrity, aiming to invoke an introspective response about personal experiences with animals and the natural world. Many of my pieces include a vessel, which I have often wheel thrown, altered, and carved to integrate with the animal form and become functional in the domestic setting. I enjoy using multiple types of clay and firing methods to create variation and am constantly seeking to achieve that fascinating moment in nature where symmetry and randomness are one.
